I'm 100% positive those GTPs only had the 3.4 DOHC. It was a peppy engine and felt pretty good if you were lucky enough to find a five speed (My buddy in HS had a 93 SE with the 3.4 and a 5 spd). I always liked those cars.

Am I missing something?
you asked about common problems with a car that's 15 years old, no pictures, no history other than it has had internal engine work. It's going to be really hard to tell you about common problems on a car that old. (The list gets a lot bigger on older cars).

As far as "what you asked being possible" I don't see anything in your posts requesting something like engine swaps, transmission swaps, turbo's, etc that people are generally looking for possibilities on. So I'm not sure what you are referring to.

If you just want a general list of things to look at on those cars....

-It's the 4t60e transmission, there are a slew of problems that came with that particular transmission. Be prepared to at least flush it, at most an overhaul.
-The engine, make sure it was done right and there isn't any oil burning, coolant in the oil, etc.
-Pull out a spark plug and check it for condition. It will tell you how the car has been treated.
-How are the spark plug wires?
-CV axles, make sure they are not spitting grease.
-Breaks, I have no idea how much life these will have but it's always a good idea to check for warped rotors and pad life.
-Wheel bearings could be worn/old and causing vibrations at speed
-Struts/shocks could be blown. With the car standing still push down at each corner of the car and release. The shock should "catch" the car on the 1st bounce. If it doesn't you need new ones
-Sagging rear springs is pretty common
-Rust is something to check for
-Break fluids flushed?
-Power steering fluid tends not to get changed very often due to the location of the power steering reservoir. check it for color and smell.
-Interior convenience features like air conditioning, heater core leaking (coolant smell in the cabin), stereo operation, HUD (if equipped), instrument light bulbs, etc
-Tires, how much tread life left? 10/32 of an inch is usually 100% treadlife since most new tires are that thick. I think legally 2/32" is the point where they need replaced
-What condition is the belt on the engine?
-How dirty is the air filter?
-Carfax? has it ever been in an accident

Literally the list goes on, especially with a significantly older car like that.

I was asking in general if these cars have any common issues not due to age.

Also is 270whp achievable just with a engine rebuild/upgrade oversized pistions etc etc

<p>I don't know a whole lot about those engines personally....</p> <p>Realistically to make that kind of power on an N/A 3400 engine:

This is an example of a guy on grandprixforums.net
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.grandprixforums.net/f16/3400-built-long-block-complete-11.html">http://www.grandprixforums.net/f16/3400-built-long-block-complete-11.html</a>

His target is 250whp with the mods he has on the exact same car type, and year as yours. That's roughly 290crank hp through drivetrane loss. He's got 11:1 compression ratio with bored cylinder larger pistons, massive head work, etc.

So it sounds like he's probably "exaggerating"</p>

well, from my own experience with the LQ1 (3400 engine).
I've worked on a 1991 lumina that this girl had absolutely abused to 160,xxx miles if I remember right. It kept on running. She severely neglected the oil changes and routine maintenance. The air conditioning gave out, the interior "convienience" features where pretty much the first to go. It "seeped" oil from just about everywhere, but kept on running.

The 4t60E Isn't exactly known for taking any kind of power above stock without significant upgrades. Just keep that in mind.

Because of the overhead cam setup with a cogged belt, I would definitely suggest replacing the timing belt no matter what. I'm pretty sure it's an interference engine.

I do know the 3400 V6 was one of those marvels of GM. It has the power of a 4 cylinder, and the gas mileage of a V8. Don't get me wrong it was peppy for a lumina of it's day, but it left a lot to be desired.

I do have a friend that has the 3400 in his fiero. He's had head work done to it, and it's mated to his Getrag 5 speed manual. In the Fiero he runs low 15's. That's after a clutch abusing ~5000 RPM launch.

I hope this helps, because this is about as far as my knowledge is on that particular model year. There may even be something I'm missing too since I havn't touched one in about 2 years.
